OCCC Student Wins $5,000 College Scholarship from TFCU

JJ Fields works hard to juggle school, jobs and life while keeping an eye on his future. He’s attending Oklahoma City Community College for his associate degree. As a next step, he’s planning to get his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or graphic design and also go into ministry.

When he found out he was one of five winners of TFCU’s $5,000 Back to Campus scholarship contest he said, “I wasn’t going to take another class this semester, but now I can afford to add another class, pay off some fees and pay rent.”

When he first got the call that he won the TFCU scholarship contest he thought, “This is so sketch. I didn’t get too excited at first,” said JJ. “But then I remembered signing up at my school when TFCU was handing out flyers at the table and then I told my girlfriend and my roommates [about winning]. I’ve got this weird luck!”

At OCCC, JJ works under the federal work study program doing marketing, social media and special events for the college. In addition, he works on the events team for the University of Oklahoma athletic department.

The working student also has a passion for music and performance. “I do ballet and play piano. Piano is easy to learn but hard to master,” said JJ. “I like piano because you can put all of your emotions into it. I’m trying to learn trumpet and drums, too.”

Each year, TFCU opens its annual scholarship contest August 1 through September 15.
