When Christopher Smith got the call that he’d won $5,000 in Tinker Federal Credit Union’s College Cash giveaway, he couldn’t believe it.
“Honestly, I thought it was fake at first,” he laughed. “But when I saw it was real, I was just grateful. This was God.”
A senior at Langston University majoring in health, physical education and recreation, Christopher says the scholarship is a big help during a busy and costly final year.
“College is expensive – anything helps,” he said.
Turning an injury into inspiration
Christopher’s dream of becoming a physical therapist started in eighth grade after a football injury sidelined him for a year. “I went to physical therapy and liked the atmosphere. Ever since, I’ve wanted to help people the same way others helped me”
Staying true to his roots
Originally from Oklahoma City, Christopher loves being close to family and enjoys a mix of country and city life. Outside of school, he rides horses, watches sports and spends time with family.
A family connection to TFCU
Tinker Federal Credit Union has been part of Christopher’s family story for years. “My mom and grandparents use Tinker – it’s been great for them,” he said. His mom was thrilled when he told her about the scholarship, though she double-checked it wasn’t a scam first.
Celebrating hard work
For Christopher, the scholarship is both financial support and motivation.
“College is hard, but you have to apply yourself fully. You really have to want it,” he said.
He also appreciates TFCU’s commitment to helping students.
“Anything that helps a student pay their bills makes a big difference,” he said.
Christopher plans to put the scholarship toward his school bills first – and maybe treat himself to a nice meal afterward.
