EMV Card Frequently Asked Questions

Why did I receive a new card?
All TFCU credit cards, reloadable cards and MoneyPlus cards now include EMV chip technology, which provides enhanced security and global acceptance. Your new card features this chip technology, as will all future credit, reloadable and debit cards issued from TFCU.

What do I do with my old TFCU card?
Once you have activated your new EMV chip card, please destroy your existing card, as it will still be active and is a security risk.

Do I need to reload my new credit or debit card to my mobile wallet?
Yes. If you previously programmed your TFCU credit card or MoneyPlus debit card to work with a mobile wallet, you will need to delete your previous card from your phone and re-load the new card in order to continue using your mobile wallet.

What is EMV chip technology?
EMV (stands for Europay, MasterCard® and Visa®) is micro-computer chip technology that provides increased security capability. EMV chip cards are equipped with a small metallic square (chip) on the front of the card that holds your information. Originating in Europe, EMV technology has been instrumental in preventing the spread of card fraud.

How does EMV chip technology protect my information?
Every time you use your EMV card at a chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code that allows only authorized users to access your information. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used.

Where can I use my EMV chip card?
Because not all retailers have chip-enabled terminals, your chip-enabled card still features a magnetic strip, giving you the freedom to make purchases anywhere that accepts Visa or MasterCard. Additionally, EMV technology has broad global acceptance and is supported in 80 countries, including Canada, countries in Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Can EMV technology protect me against fraud online?
Currently there is no foolproof method to protect against fraud online. You should continue to use the same caution when making online purchases, including verifying that the website is secure. Additionally, Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure Code provide an additional layer of protection when making online purchases. These services confirm an online shopper’s identity by requiring them to put in a password when making a purchase on a website. Adding Verified by Visa or MasterCard Secure CodeTM protection to your card requires a one-time activation via the Tinker FCU website to set up a password. After setting up your account, you will have an added layer of protection and peace of mind while making online purchases.

If I swipe my EMV chip card, is my information still protected by this technology?
To receive the enhanced fraud protection an EMV card provides, it must be used at an EMV terminal as an EMV transaction. The magnetic strip provides the convenience to use your card at any merchant location that has not yet implemented EMV chip-enabled terminals.

How do I pay at a chip-enabled terminal?
It’s easy to make purchases with your chip-enabled card. Simply insert the chip end of your card into the terminal with the chip facing up. Leave your card in the terminal and follow the on-screen prompts. Remove your card from the terminal when prompted, then sign for your purchase and take your receipt.

Why do I need to leave my card in the terminal?
While your card is in the chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip creates a unique transaction code. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used. If you remove your card too soon, your transaction will be canceled.

Do I need to enter a PIN when using my credit card at a chip-enabled terminal?
No. You will not need to enter a PIN when using your TFCU credit card at a chip-enabled terminal, but you may be prompted to sign for your purchase.

Has my card information changed?
For your convenience, your card number and PIN have not changed. Your card may have a new expiration date, so be sure to update your information with billers that charge your card regularly.

Will I have to pay any fees to use my chip-enabled card?
No. There are no additional fees to use your EMV card.

Does my EMV credit card have all the same benefits?
Yes. You can count on the same level of benefits you always have.

Can I still earn rewards with my credit card?
Yes. You will continue to receive the same great rewards you always have.
