Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Being Green Can Be A Family Affair

The U.S. produces half of the world’s garbage, but only has six percent of the world’s population. According to familyeducation.com, an average family throws away 10 pounds of paper every week. We all enjoy the conveniences of modern life but these conveniences create trash that pollutes our earth. Here are a few simple ways to help your family start becoming green.

  • Reduce the amount of stuff you use and bring home. Bring your own bags to the grocery store. Buying in bulk can also help reduce the amount of packaging you use.
  • Sell, donate or trade in old clothes, toys, aging electronics and even appliances. Cash for Appliances is a new federal program aimed at getting consumers to trade in old appliances and purchase more energy efficient ones. For more information, visit www.energysavers.gov.
  • Set up an easy way to recycle and get your family involved. Most communities provide curbside recycling services. It is a good idea to research what types of items your community recycles ahead of time.
