Outdoor Water-Saving Tips

Outdoor watering can noticeably increase your water bill in the summer months. Proper watering of your lawn and plants can save thousands of gallons of water annually. To keep costs down, preserve a natural resource and keep your lawn and garden healthier, try these tips:

  • Check your sprinkler system often for leaks and adjust sprinklers so you’re only paying to water your lawn, not the sidewalk and street.
  • Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps. Use a layer of organic mulch around plants to reduce evaporation.
  • Only water your lawn when needed. If you leave footprints when walking across your yard, it’s time to water. Otherwise, hold off and save.
  • Use a higher setting on your lawn mower. Longer grass shades root systems and holds soil moisture better than shorter grass.
  • Use the minimum amount of fertilizer needed. It increases water consumption.
  • Use sprinklers that throw big drops of water close to the ground. Smaller drops of water and mist often evaporate before they hit the ground.
