Frequently Asked EMV Card Questions
Most credit and debit card holders now carry at least one card with an EMV chip. And, as more and more retailers enable their chip readers, users continue to wonder about the benefits of this technology. Here are some answers to those frequently asked questions.
How does EMV chip technology protect my information?
Every time you use your EMV card at a chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code that allows only authorized users to access your information. This prevents stolen data from being used in a fraudulent manner.
Where can I use my EMV chip card?
Because not all retailers have chip-enabled terminals, your chip-enabled card still features a magnetic strip, giving you the freedom to make purchases anywhere that accepts Visa or MasterCard. Additionally, EMV technology has broad global acceptance and is supported in 80 countries throughout the word.
Can EMV technology protect me against fraud online?
Currently, there is no foolproof method to protect against fraud online. You should continue to use the same caution when making online purchases, including verifying that the website is secure.
If I swipe my EMV chip card, is my information still protected by the technology?
To receive the enhanced fraud protection an EMV card provides, it must be used at an EMV terminal as an EMV transaction. The magnetic strip provides the convenience to use your card at any merchant location that has not yet implemented EMV chip-enabled terminals.
